چکیده

In fields as diverse as sociology and physics researchers have been investigating the rich networks that exist in nature. More recently, a small number of multi-agent researchers have shown that the performance of a group can be significantly impacted by the nature of the network that connects them. In this chapter, we build on these initial efforts, performing systematic experiments in an attempt to understand how and why social networks affect group performance. Our key conclusion is that performance of a team can sometimes be improved by imposing a social network with relatively few connections even if it were feasible to connect the agents with a complete network.

Building effective intra-organizational networks: The role of teams

This paper integrates the largely independent literatures on networks and teams. Our objective is twofold: (1) to understand what constitutes an effective organizational network when much of the work of the organization is done by teams; and (2) to examine what the internal and external social capital needs of teams are. We raise questions to guide future research, and point to potential manage...

An improved particle swarm optimization with a new swap operator for team formation problem

Formation of effective teams of experts has played a crucial role in successful projects especially in social networks. In this paper, a new particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is proposed for solving a team formation optimization problem by minimizing the communication cost among experts. The proposed algorithm is called by improved particle optimization with new swap operator (IPSONSO...

Building Successful Software Development Teams Using TSP and Effective Communication Networks

Social network models can help explain how and why some organizational structures and practices work. Moreover, network analysis is accessible to engineering practitioners and is particularly effective in helping us understand the value of Team Software Process (TSP). Networks not only offer an explanation of how TSP works with respect to communication, but also suggest that as we scale beyond ...

How to Make the Team: Social Networks vs. Demography as Criteria for Designing Effective Teams

We compare two alternative approaches for evaluating the potential of a work group or team: one that focuses on team members’ demographic characteristics and one that focuses on the members’ social networks. Given that people’s network contacts often share their demographic attributes (i.e., the network is homophilous), the two approaches seem equivalent, and the first seems preferable because ...

Transactive Memory and Trust Networks in Computer-Supported Teams

The development of transactive memory facilitated by trust relationships and social exchanges is of emerging importance in distributed environments characterized by a lack of rich social presence. Situated at the nexus of research on computer-supported teams, this study examined the effects of trust networks and social presence on transactive memory. The results indicated that dense trust netwo...

Exploiting Synchronicity Networks for Finding Valuables in Heterogeneous Networks

Successful enterprises depend on high performing teams consisting of productive individuals, who can effective find valuable information. Predictive methods are highly desired to identify these inter-related, multityped entities that can potentially help to improve enterprise performance before they become productive. For such predictive methods, observation of their dynamic behavior in the org...
